High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with  HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom
Students are supported to set learning goals, track progress, and reflect on achievements, fostering independence and ownership of learning. Teachers use explicit instruction and visible learning strategies—such as Learning Intentions, Success Criteria, and Bump It Up Walls—to make progress clear and achievable for every student. Students engage with technology for creative and academic expression, developing digital literacy and problem-solving skills through multimedia learning experiences. Regular art, music, drama, and sport lessons encourage creativity, collaboration, and perseverance, helping students build confidence across intellectual, creative, social-emotional, and physical domains.
Across our school
Student growth and effort are recognised through classroom awards, assemblies, and the school’s PBL framework, reinforcing persistence and high expectations. Peer mentoring and buddy reading programs encourage leadership, empathy, and communication skills while supporting literacy growth across the school. The Student Representative Council provides meaningful opportunities for students to lead initiatives, share their voice, and contribute to school decision-making. Families are valued partners in learning, engaging through showcases, assemblies, cultural events, and open classroom experiences. Aboriginal perspectives are embedded across learning areas, and programs such as Cultural Blak, Brave and Deadly, Bro Speak, and Sista Speak promote pride, identity, and cultural understanding. These initiatives celebrate diversity, strengthen connection, and ensure every student feels seen, supported, and capable of achieving excellence.
Across NSW
Dubbo North Public School proudly supports students to extend their learning and showcase their talents beyond the classroom. Students participate in debating, public speaking, and creative arts programs such as dance, choir, and eisteddfods, as well as regional sporting knockout competitions. Many represent the school at high levels in swimming, athletics, and cross country, demonstrating determination, teamwork, and school pride. Many students are supported to progress to regional and state talent programs, building pathways beyond primary school. The school also provides opportunities for cultural enrichment and leadership through programs such as GRIP Leadership, Moorambilla Voices, NAIDOC celebrations, and community ANZAC services. These experiences connect students with the wider community and the state, promoting confidence, citizenship, and a strong sense of belonging.
